The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
